Have you ever met a man who had the head of a moose? These kids have! They are referring to Bogart, a talk show host in a new National Children's magazine released earlier this year called "Zamoof!". A few of the other characters featured in the magazine include an energetic sports enthusiast 'Crazer', a skateboarding teen 'Blake' and a girl that flies around the world on a butterfly named 'Jessica'. "The characters have been designed to connect the magazine with its readers, encourage them to read and at the same time teach and prepare them for life" comments its founder, TeLeni Koochin of Kelowna, BC Canada. "I compare the magazine's format with giving the kids their vitamins along with their cheezies. Its content is first fun and entertaining but has a strong underlying purpose and that is helping youth make safe and healthy choices now and the teen years ahead....there are so many mixed messages out there."

Non-denominational in nature, Zamoof! is designed for kids aged eight to thirteen years. "We are careful to only deal with the black and white issues that all parents are concerned about" said Koochin. Topics like drug and alcohol prevention, violence, problem-solving, respect, tolerance and honesty are brought to the forefront. Other unique editorials are 'Right Choice Wrong Choice' and 'It Happened to Me' which is a true story of a poor choice made by a youth and the fallout of his actions. "We've already received so much positive feedback on this editorial, I think parent's really appreciate it" said Koochin.

Being a mother of four and holding a teaching degree herself, when TeLeni came up with the concept of the magazine she knew she wanted education to play a major role. Many classrooms have already participated in the magazine from Atlin, a little town on the Yukon border, to Granville Ferry in Nova Scotia. "We have select pages reserved for schools if they'd like to fill them and the results have proven to be a very rewarding. We wanted kids to really feel a sense of ownership over this magazine, to build a strong connection with them and their interests. Plus, directly involving students gives them a very unique learning experience that we believe could inspire them in a variety of positive ways."

So, where did the name come from? Koochin comments "I figured it would be easier to make one up then try to think of something I liked. I knew I had it right when I tested it out on a few kids....it made them smile."

The magazine is presently available in Chapter & Indigo Book Stores and various retail outlets in both Canada and the US. Their website is www.zamoofmag.com or they can be reached at 1-877-762-ZMAG. Zamoof! will be supported by subscriptions and advertising/sponsors that fit within the mandate of the magazine.
